Fall Bass Fishing on Guntersville Lake
Reed's Guide Service
Posted: 9/1/2005 Reed MontgomeryBig, largemouth bass begin to emerge as they patrol the weedy shallows this Fall on Guntersville Lake, Alabama's Largest reservoir. Unlike during the spring spawn, these bass, (some exceeding 10 pounds) are feeding and fattening up for the upcoming winter months. They are not so temperamental as bedding bass can be. Making them less difficult to entice, to hit your offerings. Big, foolish bass will hit lures from top to bottom as waters cool, lures many bass refused to attack a month or so ago. Keep in mind these are big, tackle testing largemouth bass, adept at testing an anglers equipment and patience. Leave the light line and light tackle outfits at home. Unless that's your preference. Weedy growth in the shallows of this flatland lake, such as Eurasian millfoil weeds, Hydrilla weeds, mossy bottoms and some lily pads all attract baitfish, harbor crustaceans, and feature hordes of small minnows. Even some small bank running creatures such as frogs and small mice can be found here...also some very huge bass. Lures that mimic these creatures and other edibles on the Fall dinner table, should be used with strong line and good dependable rods and reels. Sharp hooks are a must and include a good long handled net. Trophy bass are found on Guntersville Lake year-round, but only a few anglers land them due to angler error. Be prepared for the big one.' Lures such as buzzbaits, frogs, rats, spinnerbaits, shallow running crankbaits, jerkbaits and rattling lipless lures can easily be fished on 20 pound test monofilament line, or as some anglers prefer, 30 pound braided line. Smaller lures such as soft jerkbaits or floating worms are great Fall lures on Guntersville Lake and both of these lure types should be fished with 14-15 test line. The same goes for bottom fished plastics and jig combos. But with in close techniques such as Flipping or Pitching lures around piers and boat houses, or when probing thick matted weeds, may call for line in the 20 pound test category.
